Scent signature: definition, examples and how to create one
In short: a scent signature is a fragrance created for a brand or a place and recognised as its own. Diffused in its spaces and extended to its products (mists, candles), it links the brand to a pleasant feeling. It is created in a few steps: brief, olfactory directions, trials, approval, then diffusion and derived products.

We recognise a brand by its logo, its colours, sometimes its music. More and more hotels, shops, agencies and companies also want to be recognised by their scent. But what exactly is a scent signature, what is it for, and how do you create one without ending up with an interchangeable "ambient fragrance"? Here is our method, illustrated with real projects.
What is a scent signature?
A scent signature is a fragrance specific to a brand. It is composed for the brand, based on its story, its values and the emotion it wants to convey, then used consistently wherever the public encounters it.
Scent signature or olfactory identity?
The two terms are often used interchangeably. They can be distinguished as follows:
The scent signature is the fragrance itself: a formula, a recognisable smell.
The olfactory identity is the whole approach: the signature, but also where and how it is diffused, at what intensity, on which products, and how the teams talk about it.
To go further on the second aspect, read our article Olfactory identity: make your brand unforgettable.
Bespoke signature or catalogue fragrance?
Criterion | Catalogue fragrance | Bespoke signature |
Exclusivity | The same fragrance may be diffused elsewhere | Composed for your brand only |
Link with the brand | Chosen because it is pleasant | Built from your story and values |
Set-up | Fast | Requires a brief and trials |
Derived products | Limited to what exists | Mist, candle, roll-on, gifts in your scent |
Continuity | Depends on the supplier's range | Formula kept so it can be reproduced identically |
A well-chosen catalogue fragrance can be a good starting point. A bespoke signature becomes a brand asset.
Why does a brand need a scent signature?
Because smell reaches emotion first
Information picked up by the nose goes to the olfactory bulb, which is directly connected to the amygdala, involved in emotions, and close to the hippocampus, essential for memory. A smell is felt before it is named. Researchers remain cautious about how far this link goes: in a 2014 review published in Frontiers in Psychology, Maria Larsson and colleagues note that most studies find an emotional advantage for odour-evoked memories, although not all studies do. Psychologist Rachel Herz (Chemical Senses, 2004) observed that memories triggered by a smell were described as more emotional than those triggered by an image or a sound.
Because consistency matters
In retail, a study by Anna Mattila and Jochen Wirtz (Journal of Retailing, 2001) showed that a pleasant scent consistent with the store's atmosphere improved how the store was evaluated. The key word is consistent: a pleasant fragrance unrelated to the brand says nothing.
Because it works well beyond the lobby
Once created, the signature is diffused in your spaces and appears in your amenities, client gifts and events. It is a common thread, where a catalogue fragrance remains a piece of equipment.
An honest caveat: a scent signature replaces neither good hospitality nor a good product, and no one can promise a sales figure. It makes an experience more pleasant and more memorable.
Examples of scent signatures by sector
Hospitality: La Ponche, Saint-Tropez
For Hôtel La Ponche, our perfumer Isabelle Ferrand composed a floral-aldehydic-musky accord: bright aldehydes in the opening, cyclamen and lily of the valley at the heart, white musk and tonka bean in the base. Ambient diffusion is complemented by a mist applied to the hotel's linen, so the fragrance carries through to the rooms. The reception team talk about it in their own words, and guests ask to take the scent home. We tell the story in Behind the scenes of Hôtel La Ponche's scent, and the full hotel method in From idea to diffusion: creating a hotel scent signature.
Real estate: AGERIM ORPI Nice
The agency suffered from drain odours coming from the building. Rather than masking them, it made them the starting point of its olfactory identity. After a test phase with samples and temporary diffusers, it chose our Creator Pack to compose a signature around a woody sandalwood accord: warmth, stability, serenity. The reception and offices were then equipped with cold-air nebulisation diffusers, with refills renewed every month. The details are in our article Olfactory ambiance and property sales.
Retail and shops
In a shop, the signature extends the visual universe: wood and leather for a leather-goods house, fresh green notes for a concept store. It is diffused in store and can become a candle or mist sold at the till, which customers take home.
Pharmacies
Several pharmacies have entrusted us with creating their olfactory identity. The challenge is specific: erase the image of a cold, clinical place without bothering customers who may be vulnerable. We therefore work with clean, soft notes (white tea, light citrus), low intensity and formulas that follow IFRA recommendations.
Offices and headquarters
At a headquarters, the signature speaks to visitors as much as to employees. It marks the reception and hospitality areas, while work areas remain very discreet or unscented.
Product brands
A professional brand that already had its own fragrance, used in its products, turned it into mists given to its clients at year end. The signature then leaves the premises and enters clients' homes.
How do you create your brand's scent signature?
The brief and olfactory questionnaire. You fill in our questionnaire: brand story, values, clientele, places to scent, materials you love or want to avoid, the emotion you are after. It is the basis of the perfumer's work.
Olfactory directions. Our perfumer Karine, trained in fine fragrance (ex-Chanel), translates the brief into several directions: for example a warm woody one, a bright floral one, a fresh green one.
Trials. You smell the proposals, give your feedback, and she adjusts. Where possible, a real-life test with a diffuser in your spaces checks how the fragrance performs in the volume, with your ventilation.
Approval. The chosen fragrance becomes your signature. Its formula is kept and protected, at our laboratory and in Grasse, so it can be reproduced identically over time.
Diffusion. We install professional cold-air nebulisation diffusers, to buy or rent, with alcohol-free fragrance refills. Intensity and time slots are set space by space.
Derived products. Room or linen mist, candle, roll-on, client gifts: the same scent appears at every touchpoint.
At Eco French Lab, this creation process is our Creator Pack. Allow about 2 weeks between the questionnaire and the approval of your fragrance.
How do you make a scent signature consistent and recognisable?
One scent, everywhere. The same fragrance at reception, in products and in gifts. Multiplying fragrances blurs the message.
Controlled intensity. The nose quickly gets used to a stable smell: diffusing in cycles keeps the fragrance noticeable without making it overpowering.
A name and a description. Give your fragrance a name and a sentence to describe it. Your teams can then talk about it when a customer asks.
Teams on board. At La Ponche, it is the reception team's enthusiasm that brings the fragrance to life. A signature imposed without explanation does not have the same effect.
Time. A signature is recognised because it comes back. Avoid changing it every season; light variations are possible without touching its DNA.
Mistakes to avoid
Choosing by personal taste. The signature must appeal to your clientele and reflect your brand, not just the manager.
Copying a trendy fragrance. Pleasant, but unrelated to you, and already smelled elsewhere.
Diffusing too strongly. An overpowering fragrance is tiring and can bother sensitive people.
Masking a bad smell. Treat the cause first, then add fragrance.
Neglecting diffusion. A beautiful fragrance that is diffused unevenly, or missing one week out of two, loses credibility.
Forgetting derived products. If people like the fragrance, your clients will want to find it at home.
Frequently asked questions
What is a scent signature?
It is a fragrance created for a brand or a place, used consistently in its spaces and on its products until it becomes recognisable.
Can a small business have a scent signature?
Yes. The principle is the same for a shop, a practice or a large hotel. Only the number of diffusers and the volume of fragrance change.
How much does a scent signature cost?
The budget depends on the creation (bespoke or selection), the number and size of spaces, the choice between buying and renting diffusers, and derived products. We provide a quote based on your brief.
Can the signature be turned into products?
Yes: room or linen mist, candle, roll-on, gift sets. It is one of the main benefits of a bespoke fragrance.
What happens to my fragrance formula?
It is kept and protected at our laboratory and in Grasse, so your fragrance can be reproduced identically, year after year.
Conclusion: give your brand a scent
A successful scent signature does not stand out like an advert: it is felt, and it stays. It takes real creative work, controlled diffusion and consistency. Want to create yours?
